Fitness Unlimited and SIV take positive steps for cancer charity

Staff from a leading leisure operator who took steps for their charity of the year to help in the fight against cancer have raised more than £300.

The team, made up of five members of staff from Fitness Unlimited and Sheffield International Venues (SIV), took part in Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s ‘Walk as One’.

Laura Greaves, Julie Mosley, Karen Smith, Sharon Torrens and Pui Porter all took to the streets for the 5k walk for the charity.

The leading cancer hospital is particularly close to Pui’s heart, as her partner’s father has recently been treated for bowel cancer, undergoing almost a year of chemotherapy treatment.

Pui, who works in SIV’s human resources department based at Don Valley Stadium, said: “When my partner’s father was diagnosed with cancer it was a shock to the whole family, but the care and support he received at Weston Park was fantastic. The specialists and nurses at the hospital are all brilliant and we are really lucky to have such a renowned hospital on our doorstep.”

“Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is Fitness Unlimited’s chosen charity of the year, so we are delighted to have raised these funds which will help them to be able to continue the fantastic work they do whilst raising awareness of cancer.”

Catherine Newman, senior fundraiser at Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, said: “We are delighted with what SIV and Fitness Unlimited have achieved for us and it was great to see them down there on the day.”

Fitness Unlimited, which offers gym membership to over 15,000 members and classes at four SIV sites across the city including Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Hillsborough Leisure Centre, Concord Sports Centre and Don Valley Stadium are set to support a number of events over the year, all proceeds of which will go to Weston Park.

The ‘Walk as One’ saw cancer survivors, people who have lost loved ones or had experience of cancer in their lives, supporters of the charity, and the general public join together to ‘Walk as One’ in the fight against the disease and raise as much money as possible for one of the region’s leading cancer charities.
