Cancer Treatment at Weston Park Hospital
Cancer treatment varies depending upon the type of cancer, the stage of the cancer and the individual being treated. Two of the main forms of cancer treatment however, are Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy, and the Cancer Charity has been instrumental in helping to provide world class facilities at Weston Park Hospital for both of these key areas.
What is Radiotherapy?
The use of high energy X-rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumours.
Weston Park Hospital is the only dedicated cancer hospital in the region and one of only three in the U.K.
The hospital has the only Radiotherapy department in South Yorkshire, serving a population of over 2 million people.
In addition, clinicians from Weston Park Hospital run chemotherapy clinics in District Hospitals across our region.
Because the Cancer Charity provides vital funding to the hospital in support of excellent treatment and care for those living with cancer, people in Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Worksop and Chesterfield all benefit from donations.
Since the formation of the Cancer Charity in 1994, we have raised over £3million to fund state of the art Radiotherapy
Therapy equipment at the hospital.
This has allowed the not only the purchase of the latest scanners and ultrasound machines, but also investment in research into the latest techniques.
The Radiotherapy Department at Weston Park Hospital hosts around 60,000 patient visits every year, with around 3,500 new patients being referred annually. There are around 80 staff in the department.
The Cancer Charity doesn't only fund big pieces of equipment; we have supported a number of projects that have improved the environment in which patients are seen, and helped to improve patient comfort.
What is Chemotherapy?
Treatment using a drug, or combination of drugs, to kill cancer cells.
In 2007 we completed a £1million appeal for the new Chemotherapy Suite here at Weston Park Hospital, ensuring the most modern and up-to-date facilities are available for patients undergoing this type of treatment.
Medical advances are constantly being made and your support is vital to helping us stay abreast of developing technology. For the benefit of thousands of cancer patients across our entire region please help us keep Weston Park Hospital at the cutting edge of cancer treatment.
