Half Marathon Heroes make it a dozen!

Super-fit fundraisers Louis Barnes and Alistair Hague have raised over £6,300 for the Cancer Charity by completing a half marathon in every month in 2011.

Keen runner Louis, 32 from Meersbrook in Sheffield, decided to undergo the challenge as a thank you to Weston Park Hospital for the treatment his mum received in 2010.

Having enlisted the help of running partner and good friend Alistair, the duo started the year long challenge by competing in the Ropsley Half Marathon in Lincolnshire.

Louis said: “By doing a year long challenge it also meant we could probably raise a lot more money than just doing one thing. Al was quickly on board and we started looking for races.”

The following months saw them take part in half marathons in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire as well as competing in the Ashby 20 mile road race in Leicestershire.

Louis said: “The runs also had a variety of conditions and surfaces; some being your traditional city road races, others were off road over fields, trails and paths.”

“The Grimsthorpe Half Marathon which we did in August was around the grounds of a stately home. We’ve ran in the rain, wind, frost and blazing sunshine so we’ve pretty much seen it all over the last year.”

“2011 will stick in our memories for a long time. The running has kept us fit but most importantly it’s been nice knowing that we’re helping out a great cause.”

Helen Gentle, Fundraiser, said: “Louis and Alistair are amazing – not only have they taken on such a physically demanding challenge, but they have also raised over £6,000 for Weston Park Hospital.”

“We can’t thank them enough for their wonderful efforts – the money they have raised will make a big difference here at the hospital.”
